THE Social Electricity Tariff is a Brazilian Government program that aims to benefit low-income families by providing significant discounts on their electricity bills.
This initiative was created in 2002 by Law No. 10,438 and subsequently regulated by Law No. 12,212/2010 and Decree No. 7,583/2011. The National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL) is responsible for implementing and regulating this program.
Who can participate?
To access the Social Tariff, families must meet certain requirements:
- Be registered in Single Registry for Federal Government Social Programs (CadÚnico).
- Have a monthly family income of up to half the minimum wage per person.
- The discount varies according to monthly electricity consumption.
- Families that receive benefits such as Bolsa Família, Continuous Payment Benefit (BPC), among others, are also automatically eligible for the Social Tariff.
How does the discount work?
Discounts are applied according to the consumption range:
Families classified in the low-income subclass:
- Up to 30 kWh/month: they pay 65% less on their electricity bill.
- 31 kWh to 100 kWh/month: 40% discount.
- 101 kWh to 220 kWh/month: 10% discount.
For indigenous and quilombola families registered in the Single Registry, the conditions are different:

- 101 kWh to 220 kWh/month: 10% discount.
How do I request the Social Tariff?
Currently, the Social Tariff is automatically granted to families registered with CadÚnico.
If your family meets the requirements and is not yet registered, look for the Social Assistance Reference Centers (Cras) in your city to apply for the benefit.
Benefits beyond savings on your bill
In addition to saving on your electricity bill, the Social Tariff brings other important benefits to low-income families, such as:
- Reduction of financial impact: The discount on the energy bill helps alleviate the burden of monthly expenses, allowing families to direct their resources towards other basic needs.
- Access to basic services: With guaranteed access to electricity, families can enjoy basic services such as adequate lighting, refrigeration and the use of household appliances.
- Improvement in quality of life: Having electricity at home contributes significantly to quality of life, especially in areas where access to basic services is limited.
The costs of the Social Tariff are covered by Economic Development Account (EDA). This account finances not only discounts for families registered with CadÚnico, but also other initiatives, such as Light for All Program, which seeks to universalize access to electricity in the country.
Conclusion
The Social Tariff is an essential program that aims to ensure that low-income families in Brazil have access to electricity.
Through significant discounts on energy bills, the program helps ease the budgets of these families, enabling safer and more appropriate use of electricity in their homes.
For those who meet the eligibility requirements, the Social Tariff represents a valuable opportunity to improve quality of life and guarantee a fundamental right to all Brazilian citizens. It's important to verify eligibility and take advantage of the benefits offered by this program.
