What are the government benefits for the unemployed?

Unemployment is unfortunately common. There's no need to feel inferior or discriminated against because of it, because this difficult time will pass.

Until it passes, only those who have been through it know how welcome all help is.

That's why public policies and government assistance projects aimed at this audience are so important.

    1. Unemployment Insurance

Unemployment insurance is the main “government benefit” for the unemployed. However, it is only intended for citizens who had a formal job and were dismissed without just cause.

However, there are some rules, such as the number of installments paid depending on how many the worker has already requested the benefit.

Furthermore, there is a minimum time to apply, for example, in the second application, he must have worked for at least 9 months before being dismissed.

If this is the first request, the minimum time must be 12 months worked prior to the request.

To apply, you must be unemployed at the time of application and not have any income to support your family.

The deadline for the employee to request this form is between 7 and 120 days after the date of dismissal without just cause.

You can easily apply through the Gov Portal, app Digital Work Card or in person at some offices accredited by the Ministry of Labor and Employment.

    2. Government benefits for the unemployed: Bolsa Família

THE Family Allowance is one of Brazil's main income transfer programs. According to the Ministry of Citizenship, as of February 2024, it had served more than 21 million families.

Its target audience is families in extreme poverty and poverty living in Brazil, and some unemployed people may qualify and be entitled to this benefit.

To achieve this, the family's per capita income must not exceed R$$ 218.00. Therefore, if you are unemployed and have a per capita family income equal to or less than R$$ 218.00, you can apply for this benefit.

The request must be submitted to CRAS after registering with the Single Registry. You will be asked to provide some information and an income assessment will be performed.

If everything goes well, you will receive the benefit within a few months of registering.

The minimum Bolsa Família amount is R$$ 600.00 currently, however, depending on the family composition, it may be higher.

    3. Social Electricity Tariff

Still on the list of government benefits for the unemployed, we highlight the TSEE, that is, Social Electricity Tariff.

With this program, you can get a discount of up to 65% on your electricity bill, depending on your consumption.

To be eligible, you do not necessarily need to be unemployed, but you must have a monthly per capita family income of at most half the minimum wage.

Additionally, you must be registered with CadÚnico and have the electricity bill registered in your name.

It is also important to meet the maximum consumption criterion, which must not exceed 220 kWh/month.

When requesting or updating data at CRAS, speak to the attendant about this benefit and see if registration is done automatically in your city or by going directly to the energy distributor.

In some cases, you can even request it on the website of your municipality's energy distributor.

So, go to the website and see if this option is available. For example, EDP and Coelba Neoenergia, the request can be made through the website.

    4. Government benefits for the unemployed: Gas Assistance

Gas Aid is a partner benefit of Bolsa Família, as it is also automatically passed on to Bolsa Família family members.

In fact, the payment schedule is the same. However, it's paid every two months and covers the full cost of a gas cylinder, following the national average.

It is intended for low-income families registered in the Single Registry and there is no need to make a request.

The Ministry of Development cross-references the data of those registered with CadÚnico and makes the payment automatically.

BPC beneficiaries are also entitled to this benefit, which is also one of the government benefits for those who are unemployed but have a disability or are over 65 years old.

Currently, the value of the Gas Aid for Brazilians is R$102.00.
